The Qur’an defines a Muslim as simply one who is in submission to Allah (SWT).

Qur’an 2:131 When his Lord said to him, Be a Muslim, he said: I submit myself to the Lord of the worlds.

Arabic: اذ قال له ربه اسلم قال اسلمت لرب العالمين

Ahl Al-Kitab

Ahl Al-Kitab (أهل الكتاب) is a Quranic term which refers to “People of the Book”. They are the Jews, Christians, and Sabaeans. These are the people who posses the revelations which came before.

The Qur’an makes mention of said revelations as being the Torah, Gospels, and Psalms. See, 2:41,62; 3:93,113; 21:105

How many Surahs were revealed in Makkah and how many in Madinah?

It is narrated from Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (R.A.) that he asked Hadhrat Ubayy bin Ka’b (R.A.) regarding the portions of the Qur’an that were revealed in Madinah. He said that only 27 Surahs were revealed in Madinah and the rest of the Surahs in Makkah.

Both Madinah and Mecca are in what is now known as Saudi Arabia. The two cities are roughly 451.0 km apart or 4 hours by car.
